The relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have

Robert Holden

Hi, and a very warm welcome to my website.

For me, life is about relationships whether that’s the relationship with ourself, others or the world around us.  Fundamentally, however, being able to understand and manage ourselves helps us cope better with events and other relationships in our lives.

Life can be hard at times and in those times it can be difficult to make positive decisions that help us to move forward individually, as a couple or within the family system.  Sometimes we may hit a crisis point or just get fed up with the same ways of thinking, feeling or behaving and feel that we are unable to move forward on our own.

Working with a counsellor and sharing these difficulties can give you the opportunity to discuss and explore thoughts, feelings and behaviours and find ways to change and grow.  I believe the nature of the counsellor/client relationship often reflects the way we relate in everyday life.  This gives us the opportunity to explore your ways of relating to yourself and with others as well as the options available to you if you wish to change.

Counselling is not about me telling you what to do but about us exploring together what works best for you.  Everyone, and every relationship, is unique and I believe that we are responsible for our own well-being and can chose to change how we think about ourselves and others and how we behave as a result of that.  Therapy can be challenging but also very rewarding and empowering leading to lasting change and growth.

Whatever it is that is blocking you and causing you distress, making the decision to deal with it is a really important step forward – probably the most difficult!

I provide a safe, supportive and confidential space and work with warmth, respect and compassion.

What kind of issues can I help with?

I specialise in providing counselling help with issues such as anxiety, low mood, depression, low self-esteem, panic attacks, body image, eating disorders, obesity, self-harm, stress, obsessive compulsive behaviours, couple relationships, separation and divorce, family relationships and bereavement.

My approaches

I use talking therapies with a person centred approach at all times, which means I work collaboratively with my clients, so I won’t intrude on issues that you are not ready to deal with.  I use multiple techniques in my work such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, systemic therapy, behavioural therapy, cognitive therapy, mindfulness, transactional analysis, and solution focused therapy.

Who do I work with?

I offer counselling to adults, couples, families and young people (age 11 – 18 yrs). For eating disorder counselling I work with age 18+ yrs. Sessions can be face to face, online or over the telephone.
